Progress part 2

well heres antother report, we filmed on monday and yesterday. on Monday we filmed both artists having a showdown, we used a pan movement to show their expression and their facial looks towards each other. we must have taken 25 shots for this as both artists could not stop laughing at each other when they were having the staredown which was pretty funny but in the end we got it done and we got good shots and angles of this. Next we had Avinash stand on top of his dad's prized BMW (haha) with the camera and filmed the asian artist coming out of his house and following him with the camera and then we had the black artist walking near his house and as they past each other, we got a good shots of them looking back at each other so this would build tension, then we zoomed out so we can see both of the artists looking back.

On wednesday's filming, it was pretty straight forward, slough missions we did with the asian artist. we filmed the asian artist in the train writing lyrics and 'spitting' the lines himself and we also got a shot of his notepad and the written lyrics, also in the background there was some graffiti so its creates a good image of what kinda conventin a rap film would bring. we still have to film that scene again because now we have to film more graffiti and more trains going passed. this should be hopefully done tomorrow night down central london (dont ask, i didnt wanna argue) so at the moment.. once again SO FAR SO GOOD and our rhythm is smoooth and going well. safeeeee

Past Students Production Analysis

Kabhi Socha Na Tha

Media Language-

  • The setting of the trailer is mainly in a park. The park signifies peace and equality which goes we with the music in the production as it portray's romance within the film.
  • As all of the trailer is filmed outdoor; in daylight, I'm assuming that they were using natural lighting to make their production look more authentic.
  • The sound that has been used in this Bollywood trailer is non-digetic as they have used the movie's soundtrack over their editing.
  • In the trailer the female protaganist is wearing traditional indian clothing to give the trailer a greater sense of realism.
  • Close ups have been used on the protangist when crying, to show the audience her facial expressions which the audience will then question why is he crying?
  • They used dissovles to blur scenes from one another. This was goos as it made the trailer look soft and subtle which gave the trailer that calmness and romance.

Institution-

  • The films distributor in the trailer is the famous bollwood Yash Raj Films.
  • Yash Raj Films are the second largest film industry in the world.
  • The company started out as a film making company in 1970 and has grown from strength to strength over the last three decades.
  • In 2004, Hollywood repoter carried a survey on the "Biggest Film Distribution Houses" in the world, in which Yash Raj Film was listed as the 27th in the world, making it thereby the number 1 film distribution house in India.

Genre-

  • The genre of this Bollywood film trailer is a stereotypical romantic love triangle were the female protaganist has to choose her love.

Representation-

  • The representation of the trailer shows a typical Asian girl in a love triangle, were she then has to choose which boy she wants; her best friend or the one she loves.

Audience-

  • The target audience for this traile i would believe is for an older Asian generation. Mums and Dads who enjoy the romance and love.
  • The secondary audience for the trailer would be people who like a bit of drama and are constantly involved in realtionship.

Rap music (good or bad?)

There are many different views of rap music and the main views of rap music are that rap music is mysoganistic and degrading towards women and the other view of rap music is that it a form of expression however there are two particular groups of people who have these two separate views, one is the parents and the politicians and the other is the people who are involved in rap music, the artists.

"The world of hip hop would have you believe that rap is a very poetic way of expressing yourself through music".

This is one of the sides that i was talking about, this side being the music enthusiasts who are into music and the other side: "Eighty percent of the rap music in the top ten charts contains violence. They glorify acts of beating up another person or even worse shooting them".

This is a typical view of a politician or a person who is just not involved with the music scene so has to find room to critisize.
These are the two main views of rap music, do you believe in any of them, you decide.

Overview of 'A Rapper's Ambition'

Our production 'A Rappers Ambition' will challenge the typical stereotype of our main genre RAP. the typical conventions of a rap genre are drugs, sex, money and crime. our production will be based on an upcoming indian artist whose AMBITION is to make it to the top of the rap industry but struggles as he faces many obstacles which lead to blood, courage and the creation of a rep. the reason we have chosen an indian artist is because we wanted to challenge the stereotype of a rapper and we will challenge this by having a typical black artist challenge the upcoming indian artist and from there his journey begins to become the absolute best. another reason why we chose to do this is because we wanted to show someone who lives in a poor background, earn himself a reputation by competing with the 'big boys' of rap. we were inspired by Bullet Boy (2004) for this location of an urbanized area and the poor background. We were also inspired by films such as 8 Mile (2002) and Get Rich or Die Trying (2005) because they were successful formats and we felt that these two films suited our production as they have similar storylines and conventions. By doing this and meeting our objectives, i feel that we can produce a successful production and with the knowledge i posess from GCSE media i can teach my fellow partner Avi who is new to this some new skills. Our camera shots are important because different shots create different impacts, shots like close ups create impact in relation to emotion and sympathy and shots such as low angle create power and a 'king' We hope that we can put all this together and create a successful production as our aim is to win the best production so fingers crossed.

Here is a short piece of 'MIGRAIN' analysis of our film explaining what intended meanings will be created:

M - the shots used will create impact and power and a sense of sympathy as we have included scenes such as the obstacles he has to overcome. this relates to the audience as they can feel sympathy

I - MTV - a popular company which will attract audience

G - a new convention will be challengd as an indian artist has a desire for rap and is challenged by a stereotype black rap artist so this will bring something new to the audience.

R - the indian artist will be represented in the film as an underdog and he will challenge the typical convetion of a rapper.

A - seeing this new challenge, the audience will feel willing to see this as the stereotype is challenged.

I - that we are not going to follow out typical stereotype and how a new stereotype will be conveyed in the production.

N - A use of Todorov's theory? probably but maybe Propp. it wil be structured in a unique way with the rapper becoming sucessful over the stereotype and a new one is born

Genre conventions

The genre of the film trailer that we are going to be creating is more of music and the type of music is going to be more along the lines of rap music (maybe a bit of hip hop) so the normal type of conventions that you would expect to see in movies such as this one would be lots of special effects to keep the audience hooked on what they are watching for example, in our trailer there will be an instant where some of the lyrics being said will appear on screen.

There are three other things that you might expect to see in music movies and there are drugs, sex and violence, now the drugs part is only suitable to some movies and normally it depend on what kind of a storyline is in place, the sex again depends on the story line set however sex might not be suitable in our production because of the storyline and the type of target audience we have chosen to direct our trailer at. Violence is what you expect to see in most movies and this one will certainly be no different. For example there could be a scene where the male protagonist will get attacked on the sly by his enemy.

There will be some extra things in our trailer that you might not expect to see in others for example, there will be a number of rap battles so the target audience can look at something that they can all relate to.
They are just some of the main conventions that you would normally see in a film with the same genre as ours so keep a look out for them. Check you later.

Get rich or die tryin film review

Director: Jim sheridan

writer: Terrance winter

cast: Curtis jackson
Terrence howard
Bill duke
Joy bryant

Rap superstar 50 Cent - aka Curtis Jackson - follows in the footsteps of Eminem in Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. While it boasts a first-class director and is loosely based on the singer's own life-story, the results leave you feeling a little, erm, short-changed. Sadly, it is Jackson himself who takes most of the rap for this. Kicking off with a botched robbery and the merciless shooting of its central character, Marcus (Jackson), the film then re-tells his life story from the events leading up to the murder of his mother while he was still a kid.

Forced to deal drugs in order to survive, Marcus yearns for something better and fancies a career as a hip-hop artist. But it is only a stint in prison that really allows him to focus his talent and enables him to meet a fellow gangster (Terrence Howard) who agrees to serve as his bodyguard and manager. The hustle and flow that follows plays out like a greatest hits selection of 50 Cent's own musical reflections and countless other movies besides, taking in the usual petty rivalries, gangsta' bloodshed, pimps and whores.

What makes Get Rich Or Die Tryin' most disappointing, however, is the presence of Irish director Jim Sheridan, whose very best work includes In The Name Of The Father and In America. Here, he is ill served by a clichéd script that reduces most characters to stereotype and a curiously flat performance from Jackson, who is accused on at least two occasions of failing to show any emotion by his co-stars. Without a charismatic leading man to guide it, the film struggles to maintain a worthwhile rhythm and ends up sounding like a broken record with nothing new to say.

That was just a review of Get rich or die tryin, i know it's good

8 Mile film review

The film 8 Mile opens with Jimmy "Rabbit" Smith who is in the middle of a rap battle and he freezes in his first contest at the shelter.

With himself being to embarresed he returns to what he used to do at his previous job and carries on living with his mum in a trailer right next to the 8 mile road which separates the white suburbs from the largly black inner city.

The next rap battle he gets is just a week away with him trying to achieve redemtion himself from the embarresment of freezing on the stage.

Scott Silver's script garnishes its clichés with effective social commentary. The former Marshall Mathers, meanwhile, is fine, if somewhat self-conscious, as he skulks about wearing his trademark look of wounded insolence.

The rapping is the real star. When Eminem takes centre stage, he's back in an arena he knows - and his charisma and remarkable linguistic dexterity make these profane, clever and funny scenes the best of the movie.

So this was a review of the movie 8 mile, hope you like some of the stuff i've put together.

About rap music

The word rap was originally associated with hip hop music, which was first established in the 1970's and it came from the streets of Kingston Jamaica and it was most popular amognst the afro americans and the latinos. However you know rap as people rapping or MCing to different beats that are sometimes made up or sampled from different songs.

Gangsta rap was first introduced in 1988 with the album from N.W.A. 'Straight outta Compton', and this was a contriversial matter because most of the material on the album was to do with drugs, sex and violence. I'm sure all of you lot already know about the thing that was going on between 2pac and Biggie so i don't need to talk about that, so anyway this is just a brief history of the rap scene and where it came from and who made it famous so i'll check you lot later

welcome

Welcome to our blog. The official blog of A rappers Ambition produced by Avinash, Amit, Ajitpal and Nabil. Any other blog you see of this sort is a total fraud.

life & lyrics analysis

This is a film trailer of the film life & lyrics (2006). I have decided to analyse this trailer because we as a group hope to make our production something along these lines in terms of genre and theme and our target audience will be quite similar to this film as this film is successful and popular amongst the audience. In our production we will portray a single 'Asian' male protagonist in contrast to a whole group of 'black' artists in this film, as we do not want to copy previous hits and we should just follow the main conventions and make use of them in our production. We are going to use some of the main conventions of film trailers in this genre like fast cuts between scenes to ensure that not much of the story is revealed and yet the audience have a little taster of what the film is about. we will also use different types of shots for example low angle shots to give importance to a subject, high angle shots, close ups, long shots etc. Finally we hope to attract a mass audience through a professional and realistic finish to our production because film trailers are the first sight the audience gets of a film and there is nothing worse than leaving the audience not being impacted or convinced enough to watch the film. we also hope to attract the audience my breaking a few stereotypes such as having a 'Asian' protagonist up against black artists, no use of drugs etc.

MIGRAIN ANALYSIS

Media Language - The film trailer on the whole is really fast moving which is made like that by the use of fast cuts between scenes. The trailer starts with a long shot of buildings at night and which then zooms in before the scene is changed. A lot of close ups are used to show the facial expressions of the actors. A point of view shot is used where the audience is watching from the characters point of view; this is the shot where Ashley Walters is attacked.
There is diegetic sound used which is of the dialogues spoken by the actors and there is non-diegetic sound which is the soundtrack and the voice over. The sound track used is also parallel which accompanies the scenes in the trailer. The key settings shown in the trailer are club, recording studio and streets. The props used are DJ equipment, car. The costumes worn by the actors are mainly 'tracksuits' and 'hooded tops' this makes the primary audience relate to the film.

Institution - Universal

Genre - Musical film

Representation - Black men are stereotypically represented as young music artists and there is a battle between two very talented groups of black men to make it big. There is also a female character featured in trailer along side the male lead 'Ashley Walters'.

Audience - The primary audience for this film are young middle class people aged 14-25 who enjoy musical/ reality films.

Narrative - There is not much of the story revealed as it's a film trailer but there is a clue given to the audience on what the basic theme of the film is.

Research

Above, is the film trailer of 8 Mile. We hope to produce a film trailer smiliar to this as it appeals to the same target audience we hope to attract. The use of hybrid genre is used within this film which helps appeal to a wider audience. With our production we wish to portray our rap artist in a similar way so we can also meet a greater audience aswell. The use of the deep voiceover works will which we also may do as the voiceover drowns the audience into the moving images. However, we do not want to copy previous blockbuster hits such as 8 mile but we do want to make our production as professional and realistic as possible. We hope to create a sense of reslience within our audeience by showing them to go for their dreams and as our production has a asian male protaganist we should get through to the audience more easily as it is not stereotypical.

Avinash Masih

this trailer is from 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (2005) starring hip hop senastion 50 cent. our production will be similar to this because we are trying to show a rap artist struggling his way to make it to the top of da rap industry wheras in get rich or die trying, 50 cent wants to get away from his crime at concentrate on his passion which is music. another film that really is similar to our production is 8 mile (2002) starring Eminem. in this film eminem wants to be the best in the rap industry but when he starts spittin, his words dont flow and everyone laughs at him and thinks he cant make it to the top. this is the case of our film but im not going to give much away. i was hoping to add the trailer of 8 mile but my internet explorer decided to be funny with me. but thats allim saying but trust me this is going to be a successfull production and 65/65 all da wayyyy lyk!!!!!!!!

Shot list (some of them)

wassup people i'm just gonna give you a flavour of what kind of shots are going to be used in the trailer so you get a rough idea of what it's all about.

The first shot is in the streets of our ends, and the scene starts with the camera focussing on the sky and then the camera tilts down and takes a look at a street lamp where you can see mans spitting.
Then the camera will move to a different location where it will record the music artist in the studio recording some beats, then the camera will switch location as the rapper jumps on a bus and ia practising to himself as some of the lyrics appear on screen (maybe), and then you see the artist in a number of rap battles where he's spitting his lyrics.

That's a brief idea of what we are doing, i know it's good but try and keep the excitement inside yourselfs for the finished product.

Ajitpal
wassup people, this is the basic outline of the trailer, a name ain't been decided yet but don't worry the name will fall into place soon.

The trailer we are going to produce is for a film about young music artists and how they struggle to make into the mainstream music scene. The trailer shows how the protagonist struggles from being a guy who raps on the streets to him making his dream a reality and becoming a mainstream rapper.
